What's your cottage style

Blog by Susan Brown | June 12th, 2017

The word “cottage” means different things to different people. It could be a secluded cabin in the woods, a stylish lakehouse, or an off-the-grid island retreat. It could be rustic or luxurious, simple or lavish. It could be on a river, a small lake, a large lake, a Great Lake, in the middle of the woods or in a charming small town. If you’re considering purchasing a cottage, take some time to consider your cottage style so you can narrow your search to properties that will truly interest you.

Lake House
You’re looking for a four-season dwelling with a boathouse and/or substantial dock, reliable plumbing and heating, all-weather access on maintained roads, and of course, a beautiful view. A lakehouse is a home-away with all of the comforts of home, likely located on a larger body of water connected to a system like the Trent-Severn. You can count on a decent grocery store, café, hardware store and maybe even a cute boat-up bistro just down the road or up the lake.

Cabin Retreat
You dream of a place where you can’t get reliable Internet access, the sound of the wind through the pines is the loudest noise, and life is simplified to the necessities: a warm fire, a comfy bed, a sound cedar-strip canoe and fresh fish for dinner. Your cabin is sufficiently off-the-beaten path that if you want four-season access you probably have to pay for your road to be plowed yourself. Your lake may allow only non-motorized crafts, and the neighbours keep to themselves. You go up for the solitude, not the social life.

Beach House
A whitewashed cottage with plenty of windows and a large screened-in deck provides a relaxing, comfortable home that can be luxurious or simple, depending on your tastes. Muskoka might be more known for its rock-and-pine shorelines, but beaches can be found, and they’re great for swimming!Small children also love splashing in shallow, sandy-bottomed bays. If you think you might need a gentler landscape accessible to seniors or anyone with mobility challenges, beach-front property is perfect for you.

The Charms of a Northern Town
If you like the idea of being close to the woods, a freshwater lake and spectacular recreation opportunities, but want the comfort, convenience and culture of a community, consider a home in one of the vibrant communities of Muskoka. Accessible year-round, close to amenities, yet still much quieter than southern Ontario cities, Huntsville is a complete community with character, ready to welcome you.
