Blog by Susan Brown | November 7th, 2014

On Monday, November 17, Reel Alternatives will present Woody Allen’s latest offering Magic in the Moonlight, starring renowned Academy Award-winning British actor Colin Firth and Hollywood darling Emma Stone.

A romantic comedy set in the 1920s, Magic in the Moonlight tells the story of acclaimed illusionist Stanley (Colin Firth), who goes on a trip to the French Riviera with an old friend and fellow illusionist to try and debunk the abilities of a young mystic named Sophie (Emma Stone). Sophie has taken in a wealthy American family and apparently, the son of the family, Brice, has fallen in love with her. Upon meeting the so-called clairvoyant, Stanley sets to work on proving that sheis nothing but a fraud. He becomes quite astonished with her seemingly remarkable and impressive abilities. As time goesby, Stanley undergoes a change in his opinions and mindset, but things are not quite what they seem in the idyllic French Riviera.

Magic in the Moonlight premiered on July 25, 2014 and was distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. Film critics have shown shared enthusiasm on Colin Firth and Emma Stone’s strong performances and the film’s overall light tone. Jesse Hassenger from Pop Matters commended Woody Allen’s characters, saying that the director has a tendency to “have characters say exactly what they’re thinking.” Geoffrey McNabfrom The Independent remarked that the film has a considerable playful charm and Liam Laceyfrom The Globe and Mailliked the fact that “the cinematography is radiant” and that“the vintage cars and costumes are elegant.” As for The New Yorker’s David Denby, he is of the opinion that the movie “expresses a longing to believe in the supernatural, and an equally powerful longing to disbelieve in it.”
