What to Do in Muskoka, August-September

Blog by Susan Brown | August 1st, 2014

Summer might be winding down, but that doesn’t mean that all the fun is over. There are still a lot of events lined up in Muskoka, all of which are a perfect way to cap off the season.

Farmers’ Markets
At all the farmers’ markets in the region, you can grab the last of the season’s fresh produce before they’re gone for fall or sample some locally made products, such as preserves, meats, and bread. Port Carling Farmers’ Market will be closing its doors for the season on August 28, so get over to Hanna Park every Thursday to explore a vast array of produce and handcrafted goods. Also closing soon are the Baysville and Rosseau Farmers’ Markets (both on August 29), the Bala Farmers’ Market (September 1), and the Dwight Farmers’ Market (September 9). The rest will be open until October.

Musical Performances
The Muskoka region is home to raw musical talent, which you can see for yourself on September 12 at the Muskoka Sound Musical Festival. The event kicks off at 9:30 a.m., and you’ll get a chance to see performances by local artists and musicians.

Doing Good for the Community
This is your chance to provide everyday items, clothes, and school supplies to those who need them. For those who are interested in volunteering, head over to 375 Muskoka Beach Road on Saturday, August 23, at 5:30 a.m. to help set up.

Parkinson Superwalk Bracebridge
It’s fun for all ages on this major national fundraising event for Parkinson Society Canada. Bracebridge Public School will host the event, and this year’s theme is “Everyday Heroes, Extraordinary Hope.”

Calling All Model Railway Enthusiasts!
From 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Sunday, September 14, you can enjoy a tiny slice of railroad history at the Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre, where Muskoka’s resident steamship historian and author Richard Tatley will speak about his other passion, model railways.
