Ironman is Coming to Muskoka

Blog by Susan Brown | August 1st, 2014

Muskoka has a proud history of playing host to a variety of triathlon events. Our region once hosted the ITU World Triathlon Championship and is frequently recognized as one of the best locations for triathlons. I’m excited to share with you the news that a full-distance Ironman race is set to happen in Muskoka on August 30, 2015. Athletes are also sure to appreciate the opportunity to train for this new race during the Ironman 70.3 Muskoka, now set to happen just a month before the new one, in July of next year.

Ironman Muskoka will take full advantage of Muskoka’s gorgeous landscape – its abundance of rivers, lakes, and streams, its hills and verdant forests, and impressive rock formations. Well-known as cottage country, Muskoka’s visitors who’ll be here for the event can opt to rent a lakefront cottage and discover what makes this such an iconic vacation destination.

The race itself will be centered in the Huntsville area, a community that offers a variety of attractions to its residents and visitors. Shopping, museums, restaurants, festivals, theatres, and parks – there is something here for everyone and athletes and spectators alike are sure to find something that will tickle their fancy. Those who love the outdoors have a plethora of activities to choose from – hiking, swimming, and fishing are some of the first that come to mind.

Athletes who will be part of the Ironman Muskoka event will be swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles, and running 26.2 miles in the scenic Deerhurst Resort and the surrounding areas of Muskoka. Participants will complete their 2.4 mile swim in the Peninsula Lake. Their bike course will bring them around the Lake of Bays and will have them pass through the communities of Baysville, Dorset, and Dwight. The run will then take them through downtown Huntsville, with the finish happening in Deerhurst Resort.

Ironman Muskoka will offer 50 qualifying slots to the 2016 Ironman World Championship in Hawaii.
