A Sampling of Organic Farms in Muskoka

Blog by Susan Brown | August 19th, 2014

Muskoka is justifiably famous for its over 600 beautiful lakes, lush forests, and dramatic rock outcroppings, but it’s becoming well-known as well for the fruit of its land. In fact, one of Muskoka’s goals is to establish food security in the region by promoting the growth and further development of the area’s local farms. This will provide residents and visitors with access to locally-grown food while at the same time boosting the region’s economic strength by increasing the income of its farmers.

The district as a whole is active in providing its food producers with the support system necessary for them to become successful and to continue to provide the region with a wide variety of local produce. An example of these support systems is the Farmers’ Markets. Here’s an overview of some of the farms in the area and what they have to offer:

• Located close to Bracebridge is Balmar Farm, which specializes in free range lamb. If you’re looking for free range turkey, chicken, pork, and goat meat, then you’ll want to go to Debanna Farms in Sprucedale, where homemade preserves and fresh produce in season are also available.

• For a wide range of maple syrups, berries, and vegetables, head to Brooklands Farm on Butter & Egg Road. The farm has been working since 1876!

• The Fern Glen Farm & Garden Center, ideally located in the maple forests just north of Huntsville, is a haven for gardeners, with their offerings of trees, perennials, annuals, shrubs, and food plants, to name a few. If you are looking to order sprouts and wheatgrass, Four Seasons Greens is the place to go, and those on the lookout for log-cultivated mushrooms can find them at From the Forest Floor.

These are only a very few of all the farms that offer locally grown produce in the Muskoka area. You can refer to a more complete listing here: http://www.savourmuskoka.com/farmers
