Evaluating and choosing the best neighbourhood

Blog by Susan Brown | May 24th, 2017

When it comes to relocating, it’s important to remember that a home’s location is just as important as the home itself. How do you choose the right community that fits your lifestyle and meets your budget? When looking for the perfect neighbourhood, a good first step is to find out what you would like to have in the area surrounding your home. You’ll need to evaluate the neighbourhood and get a good feel of the place, before deciding to move in.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind that can hopefully lead you to that ideal neighbourhood:

Take a look at your lifestyle

Do you and your family live an active lifestyle? If so, a neighbourhood close to trails, parks, and biking paths might be a good fit for you. If you enjoy shopping or eating out at restaurants, then pick a neighbourhood that’s near plenty of shopping and dining establishments. Know what type of places you frequent, or would like to live closer to, and choose a community that meets your requirements.

Use the internet

The web is a great tool to use if you’d like to find out more about a community. You can take a look at maps and find out various information about the area such as its crime rate, nearby attractions, schools, and maybe even its history.

Drop by during different times of the day

You might’ve visited the neighbourhood during a quiet morning or afternoon, but do you think it’s the same late at night when you’re trying to get some sleep? How about on weekends? To truly know what a neighbourhood is like, you have to see it during different times of the day and the week.

Get to know your neighbours

You won’t find a better source of information than the people who actually live in the neighbourhood. Ask about the place! What do they like about living there? What’s it like during the winter? What are the great places nearby? Trust me on this; you’ll get a great inside scoop from potential neighbours, and who knows – you might end up becoming good friends as well.
