The Culture Station brings the community a sense of its past

Have you ever wondered what townships do with out-of-service train stations? Often the buildings are uniquely situated with a building style long since forgotten and the hope is that they will be preserved.

The Town of Huntsville has made great use of what was once a hub of activity for the travelling public. It is now once again a hub, but this time the focus is community interaction and expression; then it was trains and commuting, now it is artistic expression and community co-operation.

Housed in the historic 1924 Canadian National Railway station The Culture Station is a community funded* and operated hub of arts and culture.

The Canadian National Railway station in Huntsville, Ontario was built in 1924 to accommodate travellers coming from the city and going onwards to cottage country, sometimes by steamship to connecting lakes from the landing on Lake Vernon. A heritage designation gives this important site a home for the community’s past and present.

The Huntsville Train Station Society is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to preserving the railway station and its property overlooking Hunters Bay. The Baggage Room is used to display, through important items, photographs, and information about the significant history in the areas development this train station has.

Signal North Gallery is another important feature of The Culture Station’s cultural space. The gallery operates with support from The Huntsville Art Society, which is a membership-based community club that comprises over 100 active artists who work in a range of mediums and have a range of skill level–from beginner to expert. New members are also always encouraged to join. The society enthusiastically supports fundraising efforts in the community by hosting artist exhibitions in concert with charitable endeavors, and partnership that raises funds for causes all over Muskoka.
