Top 3 Camping Do’s and Don’ts

Blog by Susan Brown | November 5th, 2014

Heading out for a camping trip anytime soon? Keep these do’s and don’ts in mind to make sure your trip will be more about enjoying the outdoors and connecting with nature than anything else.

Camping Do’s:
1. Do: come prepared
This might seem like an obvious point, but coming prepared and foreseeing every possible need before going to your camping destination is of the utmost importance. Making sure that all packed equipment works well at least the day before your trip will save you a lot of stress and frustration down the road.

2. Do keep tabs on your location
Be in constant communication with your relatives or people who can be accountable for your whereabouts. Make sure that somebody knows when you’ll be back as an added safety precaution.

3. Do help out with maintaining your campsite
Make sure to leave the campsite without any garbage or mess. If you had a bonfire set up the night before, make sure to put it out completely. Maintaining outdoor open spaces for recreational activities is a collective responsibility.

Camping Dont’s:
1. Don’t rely on your GPS.
Never head out into the wilderness without an updated version of your site’s map and a compass. Even if you think you’re fairly familiar with the area, it’s always a good idea to come fully prepared just in case. Relying completely on GPS systems can spell disaster. Knowing how to manage your location down to the basics makes a world of difference, especially during worst-case scenario type situations.

2. Don’t be afraid to come up with a more creative meal plan! With proper planning, you can come up with more appetizing meals than just your usual canned soups and eggs. Explore cooking in the outdoors with more sophisticated ingredients – you just might be surprised at how easy it is and how little things like having a delicious meal prepared outdoors can enhance your whole camping experience.

3. Don’t make it there by nightfall!
Make sure to plan your travel time accordingly before nightfall. You’ll be needing a head-start to set up camp and explore the campsite, so arrive as early as possible!
